Creating opportunities in Africa.

Next year, our personal development programme Awaken 2020 is taking participants to Africa.

Africa is a stunning continent, known for its breathtaking safaris, abundance of wildlife, fascinating cultures and friendly people.

There is so much to love about Africa.

There is also a lot that is just not right.

While we experience an abundance of possibilities here in New Zealand and in other parts of the world, millions of people in Africa don’t have access to basic needs.

The facts.

According to World Vision, more than 300 million people across Africa drink dirty water daily. It’s often women who walk more than six kilometres a day to fetch clean water, preventing them to focus on family, school or other productive work.

No continent will be as severely impacted as Africa. The UN estimates that by 2020, yields from agriculture could be reduced by up to 50 percent and there are hardly any opportunities for farmers to retrain or upskill to develop an alternative income to provide for their families.

Africa has the highest rates of educational exclusions in the world. One in three children do not go to school with the majority being girls.

The opportunity.

The Hunger Project has developed the ‘epicentre strategy’, which brings smaller communities together to form a central hub where key infrastructure like a community hall, health clinic, bank, food storage and more is housed.

We train people to become local leaders. They take responsibility for engaging local government to support local communities by including their activities in government development plans, and mobilising others to create sustainable change and reach self-reliance.

To date, women and men in 121 epicentres create and run their own development programmes, reaching 1.4 million people in their communities. Since 2015, more than 500,000 people have reached self-reliance!

If you want to see first-hand how we, in partnership with these communities, create opportunities for people to live a life of self-reliance and dignity, and empower them to be able to provide for themselves and their families, consider joining our Awaken 2020 programme

Awaken at a glance.

Awaken is a personal development programme that enables people to discover what they are truly capable of. Throughout the programme, participants are challenged in their thinking and exposed to situations where they experience everything from discomfort and guilt through to gratitude, generosity and courage.

At the core of Awaken is a seven day visit to one of The Hunger Project’s programme countries - our Awaken 2020 programme is going to Ghana. Participants will witness the power of personal transformation shown by communities in Ghana who are making the courageous transformation from hunger and dependency to self-reliance every single day.
